Common operations
- storage with inventory records;
- cross-docking without long-term storage;
- consolidation of several incoming lots;
- picking, packing, labelling and dispatch preparation.
Facility requirements
Check temperature, humidity, fire protection, floor load and access control against the cargo. Valuable or regulated goods may need enhanced security, insurance and specific permits.
Understand the tariff
Charges may be based on pallet positions or area per day, plus receiving, dispatch, loading, labels, stock counts and materials. Minimum monthly charges and urgent-handling fees can matter more than the headline storage rate.
- state average and peak inventory;
- estimate receipts and dispatches;
- provide pallet and package dimensions;
- list temperature and labelling rules;
- specify reports and data exchange needs.
Start with the product requirements
Storage selection begins with temperature, humidity, shelf life, hazard, value, compatibility, serial tracking and picking needs. Regulated food, pharmaceutical and technical goods may require additional controls and evidence.
| Process | Measure |
|---|---|
| Receiving | Booking window, unloading time, counting and discrepancy records. |
| Storage | Billing unit, minimum period, location and environment control. |
| Picking | Selection rule, packaging, accuracy and order cut-off. |
| Inventory | Stock visibility, lots, serials, shelf life and cycle counts. |
| Dispatch | Lead time, documents, waiting and loading responsibility. |
Total warehouse cost
Include receiving, put-away, storage, picking, packing, labelling, pallet work, inventory counts, returns and non-standard operations. Record service levels, liability, data access and the tariff change process.
